SAIL in Out of School Time Programming

Implementing SAIL in Out of School Time can be as simple as 1-2-3-4. Follow these simple steps to introduce SAIL into Out of School Time programs.

1. Train your staff to use SAIL. The online tool was originally intended to be used by the interested individual but in OST your staff should become familiar with how to navigate SAIL. Staff should be knowledgable enough to answer questions about the application and be able to aid customers in its use. Training can be scheduled through the Department of Human resources: Stephanie Hawkins shawkins@dhr.state.md.us, (410) 767-8121.

2. Dedicate a computer or computer time for SAIL. SAIL is an online tool, so it's imperative that a computer be available for public use. Designate a specific times and hang a calendar to let customers know when application assistance is available. You can even include a sign-up log.

3. Use parent nights and information meetings to inform and offer SAIL. Screening time is important! Therefore it is important to reach out to people at an existing point of contact instead of sending them elsewhere for assistance. The opportunity to apply for services immediately after hearing the information increases the likelihood that of individuals will use the tool.

4. Offer and distribute resource material. It is important to have outreach material available to families about the Food Supplement Program, WIC, and nutrition and healthy eating. Order this information from you local health department or include time to explore their websites in your screening time. The SAIL website provides links to WIC along with the information on local food banks and shelters on the left pane of the screen.

How to make your parent night a success:

Planning:
plan an event at the location of your OST program. Offer food or snacks at the event. Remember that these families have children, allow for activities for children while the parents are doing the application. Distribute a flyer explaining what screening is about.

Convenience: Not everyone will be able to make it to events. Offer screening when parents come to pick up children. SAIL screening can also be done as a part of other family related activities. Offer in during holiday meals and resource fairs.

Make the connection. Make SAIL a positive part of your program. It should a resource that is available to all families.

SAIL use in OST can work. Register your program as a community partner in order to allow the Maryland Department of Human Resources to track your SAIL applicants. Learn more about becoming a community partner here.
